Eternal Sunshine of the Thoughtless Mind
So, today, I found myself wondering what the deal is with these newfangled interwebs.
In a time where political correctness and strategic offense-taking are the joie de vivre of the cultured American, the internet may the last beacon of anticivilization left for the discriminatory, hateful halfwit moron.
Case in point: have you ever seen (and I assume you have) the typical comment following, say, a YouTube video of a young boy singing a song he likes. It usually looks something like this:
NeverGrajuatid09: rotflol omg u r soooooo gay its not funny!!!! keep singeing ur dum songs u stupit f*** u prolly think ur gonna b on amreiacn idal or s/t wen u shud reely just stfu!!!!!! LOLOLOLOL
I mean, what on earth is that, anyway? Can you imagine the same thing happening in real life? I suppose, in the wake of societal censuring of bigotry, sexism, vulgarity, ethnic slurs, etc., the internet is the last haven in which respectable and unrespectable slimeballs alike can express their abyssmal IQ’s in merry abandon.
The problem is that this form of media will, in all likelihood, become the dominant media before too long– leading one to wonder how much or how little society should police the internet. When does impotent bigotry become cyber-bullying? When do anti-Semitic, racist and misogynistic prattle cross the line past which they are regarded as a hate crime? Should there even be a line, or should the internet always remain the social free-for-all it seems to be?
Something to think about…
